Ski Boot Flex

Question:

Hi! I'm thinking about the Nordica Speedmachine in a 115 flex. I'm 5'5" and weigh 115-120 pounds, and although I am an advanced skier I'm not sure if I have enough heft to justify getting such a stiff boot. What if I buy it and then can't flex like I'm accustomed to?

Answer:

Hi Caroline – this is a great question.  There are a few factors to consider when choosing the proper ski boot flex. Starting with range of motion in the ankle joint, the less range of motion you have typically points you to a stiffer boot.  Your weight is good to consider but more importantly, what your expectations are for performance?  A stiffer boot will transfer the energy to the ski quicker.  At the same time, if you’re not prepared for these quick energy transfers a stiffer boot could throw you around.  While trying the ski boot on we like see good movement in the ankle but keep in mind that the boot will stiffen in the cold.

Current ski boots in general are softer fore/aft and stiffer laterally.  A good quality boot will have adjustments to stiffen or soften the flex. It’s always preferable to start with a stiffer boot and soften rather than try to stiffen a softer boot.
Unfortunately, there is no standard flex rating among brands or even within a brand.   We always recommend that folks make the trip to work with a good bootfitter who is experienced with the products.
PS We have had great success with the Nordica Speedmachine 115W!
