Determining Correct Boot Flex

Question:

Hi, Boot Pros.

What is the proper way of determining proper boot flex? I've heard the following;

1. Be able to flex and move the knee about 1-2" forward beyond the front tip of the boot without lifting the heels.
2. Be able to jump up/down while standing on the ball of the foot.

Are these correct and what is the proper way to determine the flex chosen is correct? Any specific guidelines for a developing junior racer?

Thank you.

Answer:

Great question!  First you want to concentrate on size and fit.  If the boot is sized properly it will flex better.  A lot of factors go into choosing boot flex i.e. weight, leg length, skier ability, anatomy.

We definitely like to see an active ankle and want the knee flexing smoothly especially with junior racers.  It’s preferable to soften a shell rather than attempt to stiffen a boot.  Remember, the boot stiffens in the cold.  As always, a great place to start is consulting a good bootfitter and your racer’s coach.

We’ve had great results with our junior race boots this year.  Lange RS 70, Lange RS 90 , Atomic Redster 70Atomic Redster 110 , Nordica Dobermann GP 90 , Nordica Dobermann GP 110 .

Good Luck to your racer!
