Instep/Volume Question: Need Advice

Question:

Hi,

Having trouble finding a solid boot fitter where I live, and am constantly frustrated. My instep volume is at least a CM longer than length measure, and my feet are wide (113mm) and have large calves [ex-football player]...every pair of boots I've had gives me instep pain. If I up size too much to accommodate my instep volume, it gets really sloppy in the heal. Is there any hope/a way to attack this?

Thanks,

John

Answer:

Hi John,  There is hope for you! But it would be wise to make a special trip to work with a bootfitter.  Hopefully, there’s one within reach that you could make a day trip on your day off in the fall.

  • Start with a foot assessment by a pro.
  • Stabilize the foot with a footbed.
  • Establish any fore aft issues/needs for heel lifts or boot board sanding.
  • Discuss liner options: Stock, Intuition, Zip Fit, Foam injected. Depending on how much space you have behind your heel in the shell, liner options can increase or decrease heel retention.
  • At this point, you should be able to determine if the smaller or larger shell is correct. With new custom shell materials ski boots are very manipulable which allows the boot fitter to easily customize pressure points including instep, calf and width.

We would be happy to help you out if you’re in the area! The Boot pro is located at the base of Okemo Mountain Ludlow Vt.
